Ken and Betty made a wonderful life of helping others. The Prescott Valley couple enjoyed their philanthropic work so much that they added a room to their home to create a workshop to make stuffed bears they called hug-a-bears. They were introduced to this program to comfort children in the YRMC emergency room through their membership in the Telephone Pioneers of America. They recruited friends and neighbors to cut out the patterns, stitch the bears together, fill each one with cotton batting and lots of love, and add ears, eyes, nose and a mouth.
When they met, Betty worked for the phone company in Phoenix, back before it became the sprawling metropolis that it is today. Ken came to Phoenix by bus from Ohio. They were married and eventually moved to Prescott Valley where they lived for more than 25 years. They supported the organizations that they felt were important to the quality of life here and YRMC was blessed to be one that was particularly close to their hearts.
When Betty passed away in 2006, Ken remained involved in the hospital and enjoyed playing organ for the residents of the assisted living facility that he called home until his passing in September of 2010. The loss of such wonderful people leaves a big void in our community, but a very thoughtful bequest that they made through their estate plan is confirmation that they were pleased with the important work they had done through YRMC and that they wanted it to continue. Ken had shared that it was his way of giving back to the hospital that had, many years earlier, taken such wonderful care of his mother.
The impact of their kindness and generosity will forever be an important part of the history of YRMC. A lifetime of compassion and caring for each other and the community they loved continues today as a legacy from Ken and Betty to future generations who will turn to YRMC for care.
